The concept of a union is good, the worker have a voice and can work with the employer. The problem is the union leadership, they are for the most part corrupt. What started as a reasonable exchange to improve the working conditions has become a contest to extract as much of the assets of the business to be redistributed to the workers. Steel mills were stripped of their ability to modernize and compete, they closed. Jobs went away. The short term gains made long term unemployment.
